華容道 — 2021
print

華容道 is Huang’s submission to Radical Return, a study group and curatorial project that explores the relationship between design and culture in Chinese and Chinese American community. This work were exhibited simultaneously in Shanghai and Boston in Radical Return exhibition.

Adapting the form of a puzzle, 華容道 or Klotski, this piece illustrates a state, a map, and a relationship between the blocks. In this puzzle, instead of historical figures like Guanyu, major blocks are named 父(father), 富(wealth), 斧(ax), 府(prefecture), tightly surrounding the biggest block in the middle. Sharing the same pronunciation fu, the four words represent four elements: patriarchy, capitalism, violence, and bureaucracy, that form and tighten today’s Chinese society. However, as one attempts to solve it, there might not be any solutions at all.
